Job Details
Responsible for leading shift in the absence of a Senior Support Worker, the individual’s wellbeing and acting as the senior contact in the home in the absence of the manager.
Responsible directly to the manager, and externally, the Group Manager and Company Directors.
Working hours
8 hour shifts, on a shift basis not including any sleep ins where necessary.
Salary
As defined in the contract of employment.
Qualifications
All statutory and mandatory training. LDAF induction and foundation where offered. NVQ 2, or current or working towards NVQ Level 3 in Care or equivalent studies.
Requirements
A current CRB check along with a clear POVA/ISA and two satisfactory references which must include one from your last employer OR care employer. You will be expected to adhere to the General Social Care Council’s code of practice, obtainable from your unit manager.
Desirable
Previous experience within the fields of Learning Disability and associated Challenging Behaviours.
Job Summary
- To undertake all aspects of a Senior Support role in the absence of a Senior Support Worker.
- To promote the rights and interests of all individuals whilst protecting them from danger, harm or abuse.
- To provide leadership and guidance to all support workers in relation to all work issues, supporting them to use and promote effective team working practices.
- Take responsibility for decision making. Act in any emergency situation (and in the absence of the unit manager) and to apply established protocols relating to emergency situations.
- Under management guidance, Acting Seniors have the responsibility to oversee the daily routine of the home, supporting each individual with their day to day care needs and activities, whilst allocating tasks to support workers to achieve this.
- Responsibility for house financial administration as identified by manager, to include house budgets, activity money and individuals personal allowance monies and their correct appropriation.
- Responsibility for organising and promoting the smooth running of their shifts within the home. Task allocation to support workers and ensuring any shortfalls in the rota are covered, especially in the absence of the manager.
- Acting Seniors are expected to challenge poor performance within care provision should it arise.
- Acting Seniors have responsibility to ensure that the environmental needs meet statutory requirements concerning Health and Safety Regulations and the National Minimum Standards, reporting directly to the manager any concerns.
Key Tasks
- To undertake the company induction programme upon commencing employment and to ensure understanding of information provided.
- To be familiar and promote the units policies and procedures, applying all knowledge to work practices and ensuring their compliance by support workers.
- To be familiar with the assessed needs of each individual, supervising support workers to provide appropriate care as defined in Care Plans and Risk Assessments.
- Understand and comply with all Regulatory requirements including Health & Safety, COSHH, RIDDOR and Accident reporting.
- To provide clear leadership to support workers in relation to work issues and to offer guidance and support where this is appropriate.
- To act quickly AND efficiently in emergency situations to ensure the well being of individuals and staff.
- To maintain clear and accurate records as required by the procedures established for your work and to ensure support workers complete records accurately and to acceptable standards.
- Assist individuals to manage their behaviours by positive intervention and to adopt any required intervention strategies as defined through PBT intervention training.
- Ensure Health & Safety is maintained, reporting hazards to Manager and ensuring rectification where necessary.
- To undertake developmental training where offered. Maintain & improve knowledge and skills, promoting this to support workers in the interests of improving individuals and the home.
- To support individuals to safely access facilities and activities, both in house and in the wider community, delegating responsibility for this to support workers as necessary.
- To assist the manager by liaising with outside agencies to include doctors, social workers, CLDT etc on behalf of our individual group.
- To attend and take part in Supervision with their Senior or manager and develop own skills and work practice.
- To identify strengths and needs of our Support Workers/Night Support Workers and undertake Supervision (where asked to) with the Support Workers/Night Support Workers and develop their skills and work practice.
- To be familiar with, and use, the homes ‘Whistle Blowing’ policy in the event of any abuse, neglect or harassment occurring within the home to staff or individual alike.
- To respect confidentiality of individuals and staff, unless in direct conjunction with the ‘Whistle Blowing’ policy.
- To act immediately to resolve any conflicts within the home and support the use of the following defined procedures including the Grievance Procedure, individual Complaints Procedure etc.
- To carry out any reasonable requests by your line manager as deemed necessary to fulfil your role of employment.

- To work openly and cooperatively with all individuals and colleagues and to treat them with dignity and respect at all times.
- To honour all work commitments, arrangements and agreements including any authorised changes to rotas, swaps etc.
- To declare any issues that could be deemed to create any conflicts of interests as soon as they arise, and ensure they do not encroach or influence your professional work practice or judgements. This would include secondary jobs and relationships with colleagues, contact with rival businesses etc.
- To avoid any formation of inappropriate relationships with individuals whatsoever.
- To avoid putting yourself or any other person at unnecessary risk.
- To seek guidance and clarification from your line manager regarding any aspect of your role and responsibilities that you are unsure of.
- To avoid any behaviour in work or outside of work that would call into question your suitability to be employed in the social care sector.
